Lolita's Personality
Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are friendly and intelligent. They are best with well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and can even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries so the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They need to spend at least two to three hours each day in the outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not only an excellent pet, but is also a great pet for children.
Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can be a distraction for those living close by. They can make ear-shattering calls and screeches that could be disruptive to those who live in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine the sex. Once the birds' sex is determined and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. This isn't a simple process, and it's essential that the pet's owner is patient and understands that this is not something to be undertaken lightly. Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

Lolita's Diet
